Poker Basics / Re: Poker Addiction

Poker is addictive because it provides extreme excitement. There is a feeling of intense pleasure when you win a big pot.  When you bluff players and win with the worst hand, it is a big dopamine boost in your brain. This is why you must have exceptional self control. You should have enough will power to fight the urge to play too many hands, chasing that high. Also since higher stakes generate higher excitement, you must be careful not to play beyond your means. 50c/$1 limit may not sound like much. You can lose $100 in a day at those tables if you are a beginner not knowing what you are doing. But with some experience, you can also snatch the cash from newbies venturing into the real money tables. Start with 25c/50c limit. Poker Variants. There is an endless list of poker variants. The most popular poker game is Texas Hold'em. You can pick from no limit, limit and tournament style games. Be careful about playing real money games in a style of poker you are not familiar with. Any skills you acquired with one style of poker game could be worthless in another game. Understanding the nuances of the different styles requires years of experience. Once you have mastered a single variant you can branch off into other games to refresh your mind and not get bored.

Poker variants fall into categories

draw poker - players can discard and replace their hand with cards dealt to them

stud poker  - In this variant, some cards are dealt face up so you can see what your opponent MIGHT have

shared style - In this variant, some cards are dealt face up to the center of the board, and can be used by all
Texas Hold'em falls into this category.

low - tired of getting low hands? Play lowball where the worst hand actually wins

high/low - In this style of poker the best and worst hands both can win the pot at showdown

Poker Hands A Poker Hand is a set of cards that have been dealt to a player. The value of a hand is determined by how rare that combination is. This is what makes poker so interesting. You don't know what hand your opponent has. They don't know what you have. When you place a bet, the implication is that you do have a good hand. However you may have nothing (bluffing). In order for this dynamic to work, you must be playing for a stake that matters. The players must have enough of a motivation to fold a hand out of fear of losing their money. Even at microstakes, of 25c you have enough of a stake to get players to fold to a bluff.

Here are the 7 hands of poker from most valuable down. .

Poker Probabilities

The best hand in poker is a Straight Flush
You have a Straight Flush when you have 5 cards with all the same suit, and the ranks are consecutive like

The higher the rank of your cards, the stronger the hand. So in this case 10-J-Q-K-A (also known as a Royal Flush) is stronger than 5-6-7-8-9, with A-2-3-4-5 being the weakest straight flush.

Here are some examples of a Straight Flush

FullTilt Poker FullTilt Poker has been resurrected from the dead, by PokerStars who negotiated a deal to acquire the company, pay off their debts and relaunch it. FullTilt was once the darling of the online poker industry but fell into troubled times when they tried to get around gov regulations with some questionable practices like processing player deposits with fake merchant accounts to get around gambling restrictions. In any case, they did refund player monies although it did take a while. Eventually PokerStars acquired their assets paid off player balances and relaunched the site. FullTilt has one of the best graphic interface screens for their tables. Their revolutionary speed poker style has been replicated at all the major sites.
